Linear time has been measured through the flow of substances or elements prior to the invention of the mechanical clock: water, sand, or fire burning down incense. Manuel Carvalho exposed a drone percussion to extreme time stretching algorithms and looped a translucent digital material, adding variations of how light can travel through it.

CARLOS MONLEON
EXPANSIVE TISSUE MEME
2019
meme

Plato’s rave was a meme referring to Plato’s cave allegory. It depicted the cave as underground location for secret raves in which individuals, contrary to the imprisonment of the original version, choose to enter collective ecstasy. Carlos Monleon turns the cave into a digestive tract, praising the brain’s increased neural connectivity as a by-product of optimal digestion, and mushrooms as precursors to philosophy.

MALIN ABRAHAMSSON
COMMUNICATION DEVICE
2018
green Dianthus, white doll’s hair, metal wire, turquoise plastic table cloth and pink modelling paste

Malin Abrahamsson’s “communication device” is part of a growing series of wonky mixed-media spaceholders. Announced as a temporary visitor that will be replaced in a near future, its antenna seems to keep contact with other timelines it might jump back onto at any given moment.

NARUTO
UNTITLED (SELFIE)
2011
photography

Six-year-old macaque Naruto used the short moment British nature photographer David Slater did not pay attention to his gear and took a selfie. The photo evoked a discussion about non-human entities being eligible to own the copyright for their own creations. People for the ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) have argued the macaque should hold the copyright and receive all proceeds from these photos for the benefit of the macaque reserve in Sulawesi, Indonesia.
